Books on the Chopping Block

Get behind your right to read freely and celebrate Banned Books Week! City Lit Theater Company will return to the library on Sunday, September 21st at 2:00 to present a fun concert reading of excerpts from the top ten most frequently challenged books of 2013. Since 2006, City Lit - a Chicago theater specializing in staged adaptations of literary material - has teamed up with the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom in honor of Banned Books Week. Its actors perform Books on the Chopping Block at special events, libraries, and bookstores in and around Chicago all week long. The performance runs 50 minutes and is followed by a discussion. While the program is intended for adults, children in approximately grade 6 and up are welcome to attend.

Every year, the American Library Association co-sponsors Banned Books Week, to help remind us not to take our freedom to read for granted. This year, Banned Books Week runs from September 24th - October 1st. Visit the library for banned book displays and handouts or go to the American Library Association's Banned Book Week site for more information.

Also, make sure you join us on Sunday October 2nd at 2:00 when City Lit Theater's Books on the Chopping Block performance returns. This will be a live concert reading of excerpts from the top ten most frequently challenged books of 2010. The performance runs 50 minutes and will be followed by a brief discussion. While the program is intended for adults, children in grade 6 and up are welcome to attend.

Banned Book Week and Special Performance

The annual Banned Books Week, sponsored by the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom, takes place from September 25 - October 3, but this year we're doing something different!  On Sunday, October 3 at 2:00 we'll be hosting a live reading of excerpts from the top ten most frequently challenged books of 2009 by City Lit Theater Company.  City Lit, a Chicago theater specializing in staged adaptations of literary material, will perform Books on the Chopping Block at special events and libraries all week long.  Glencoe will host the only suburban performance so be sure to not miss it.  It runs 50 minutes and will be followed by a brief discussion.

Banned Books Week Sept. 26 - Oct 3

Come to the library this week to see our display of books that have been banned or challenged in recent years, pick up a bookmark and enter a drawing to win a "I Read Banned Books" book bag. Since 1982, Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September every year.
