Now Available: Downloadable Magazines Through Zinio

Do you love to coming to the library to thumb through magazines? You can now enjoy some of your favorite titles on your computer, smartphone or tablet with Zinio! Zinio gives you access to the most recent issues of popular magazines, such as Chicago, Esquire, O and Us in full color digital format, with many back issues available as well. Simply follow this link, sign up for an account and start downloading! If you'd like to read on your mobile device then go to either the Apple App Store or the Google Play store for Android and download the Zinio app. There's no limit to downloads so you can stock up on Zinio magazines for your commute, vacation or for just laying around the house, without having to load up your coffee table.

Now Available Online: Chicago Consumers' Checkbook

Looking to find a local service company to clean that fireplace, fix the roof or board your pup? We now have access to Chicago Consumers' Checkbook online! The Center for the Study of Services - the nonprofit consumer organization that publishes Chicago Consumers' Checkbook - has been helping to educate consumers since 1974. Chicago Consumers' Checkbook gathers reviews for local businesses from actual customers and provides ratings in various categories. It's a great place to start looking for a place to provide a service and all you need is your library card to access it!

Now Available: New Genealogy Resources

We are happy to announce that the library now offers access to Ancestry (Library Edition) and Proquest Obituaries. Both are available from the library or from home (with your library card). Ancestry offers census data, immigration records, directories and more, while Proquest Obituaries lets you access more than 10 million death notices from top newspapers. Together with the historical Chicago Tribune and historical New York Times, you now have a great resource for your genealogy search! Thanks to the Friends of the Library for making this possible!

NextReads: Hot Book Lists to Your Email!

Looking for a new way to stay on top of the hot books coming out?  Sign up for NextReads and you can get monthly lists of new fiction, nonfiction and young adult books sent directly to your email!  Our librarians are busy scouring upcoming books to find the hottest titles.  With NextReads you'll get advance notice of hot books along with short descriptions and reviews.  You can click right over to our catalog from NextReads and place a hold on the book so you're sure to get it quickly. NextReads is brought to you by the same people who manage NoveList, one of our favorite databases for finding information about books and authors, so we're sure you're going to love it!

Now Available: Consumer Reports Online

We are excited to announce that we now have a subscription to the Consumer Reports website available to all Glencoe residents.  Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports, is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering consumers.  Consumer Reports features reviews and comparisons of products and services, recall information and forums.  Thanks to the Friends of the Library for giving us the subscription to this wonderful resource!

Download MP3 Music With Freegal

Looking for a way to get free MP3 music that you can play on any iPod, iPhone or other MP3 player?  Now you can download music from your library!  Freegal Music is a new service that offers over 400,000 songs from over 50 Sony-affiliated labels including Columbia, RCA, Sony Classical and Arista.  All downloads are in the MP3 format, giving you the most flexibility to use them as you wish, on Mac or PC.  Simply select Books, Movies and Music on the column on the left side of our homepage and choose Download Music (or click here).  You'll need your library card number and you're limited to 3 downloads per week, but everything that you download is yours to keep!  Thanks to the Friends of the Glencoe Public Library we are one of the first libraries in the country to offer this service!

Now Available: Downloadable Ebooks

We're excited to announce the addition of My Media Mall to our great list of databases accessible to Glencoe residents.  My Media Mall lets you "check out" and download ebooks to your computer or ereader, such as Sony Reader, Nook and more (not compatible with Kindle or Ipad).  In addition, My Media Mall lets you download audiobooks to your MP3 player, Ipod and computer.  We also still offer Netlibrary for audiobook downloads as well.  You can see more information on all of our options for downloadable audiobooks and ebooks here.  Also, be sure to mark your calendars for June 15th at 1:00 when we will be demonstrating how to download audiobooks and ebooks from My Media Mall.  We hope you enjoy this new way of checking out books!

Coming Soon - Check Out Ebooks to your Ereaders

You've been asking for a way to check out ebooks to your ereaders so we'll soon be offering a solution.  My Media Mall is a database coming to our library in May, and it will allow you to check out ebooks to ereaders such as Sony Readers, Nook and more (unfortunately, it does not work with the Kindle).  Ebooks can be checked out for two weeks.  My Media Mall will also offer audiobooks for checkout to your Ipods and other mp3 players.

For more information on My Media Mall ask at the reference desk, or attend our May 18 Technology Tuesday program on Ebooks and Ereaders, where we will demonstrate how to check out ebooks from My Media Mall to a Sony Reader.  All Technology Tuesday programs meet at 7:00.

Mango Languages Now Available

Parlez-vois francais? Sprechen sie deutsch? Non? Would you like to use your computer to learn a new language in a fun and easy way? The library now has a subscription to Mango Languages, an online language learning system. Mango Languages offers language instruction in Spanish, Chinese, French and 9 other languages. All you need is your library card to access it! Simply go to our library databases page and click on Mango Languages, under the Books, Literature and Language heading. Buona fortuna!

Downloading Audiobooks is now Easier Than Ever!

If you haven't tried our Netlibrary downloadable audiobooks yet, now is a great time to give them a shot! And if you are already using Netlibrary you will find it more flexible and easier to use than ever. Responding to popular demand, Netlibrary now offers a number of Ipod and Macintosh compatible audiobooks in MP3 format. And the new Netlibrary Media Center makes it easier to download your audiobooks to either your PC or MP3 player. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Lexis Nexis Now Available

Many of you are familiar with the name LexisNexis from your workplace...now the library offers LexisNexis as well! Our new LexisNexis Library Express database enables you to search legal filings as well as business information from sources like Standard and Poor's and Hoover's, magazines and newspapers such as the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Daily Herald and Washington Post (legal sources are only accessible from within the library).

Homework Help is Here

Glencoe students of all ages can get help with their homework assignments through Homework Help Illinois, a subscription service that connects students in grades K-12 and adult learners with online tutors for live, one-to-one help in math, science, English, and social studies. Service is available from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. Tutors are carefully screened and include certified teachers, college professors, grad students and undergraduates from accredited universities, and other professionals.

The library now has the historical Chicago Tribune available electronically, with full-text coverage from to 1849 - 1984. Click here to access the database - like all of our databases it can be accessed from home, 24/7. You can still access the Chicago Tribune from 1985 - present here.
