Centennial Website

We are very excited about the library's centennial and the special events planned to celebrate our first 100 years. In fact, we are so excited that we created a new website entirely dedicated to the centennial! Not only does our new centennial site have all of the information about current and future programs for young and old, but it features trivia and histories of the library and Glencoe as well. We've even thrown in classic photographs, summer reading lists, and a downloadable audio driving tour, and we expect to add much more in the future. You can use the link in this email or find it on the top of the TOC on our homepage. Feel free to use the site's comment form to send us any type of information or feedback on what you'd like to see.

Daniel Burnham Exhibit

As part of our Centennial programming, we will have a Daniel Burnham exhibit running in the Hammond Room through December. Entitled Make Big Plans - Daniel Burnham's Vision of an American Metropolis, this photopanel exhibit, curated by The Newberry Library, tells about Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago. Stay tuned or visit our new Centennial site for more Centennial programming.

Downloading Audiobooks is now Easier Than Ever!

If you haven't tried our Netlibrary downloadable audiobooks yet, now is a great time to give them a shot! And if you are already using Netlibrary you will find it more flexible and easier to use than ever. Responding to popular demand, Netlibrary now offers a number of Ipod and Macintosh compatible audiobooks in MP3 format. And the new Netlibrary Media Center makes it easier to download your audiobooks to either your PC or MP3 player. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Special Centennial Puppet Show

We've got a very special Centennial event for families happening on Thursday the 18th at 4:30. Roberts Marionettes will visit us to present a puppet show version of The Secret Garden, the classic story by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The show will be performed using traditional "bunraku" puppets and is for families with children age 5 and older. No reservations are needed for this special event - just come on by!

Summer Reading Club Starting Soon

The weather is (kind of) warming up, and this can only mean one thing...time for Summer Reading Club!!! Summer Reading Club for kids starts June 5th and for adults June 13th (the teen Summer Reading Club is already going). The once in a lifetime theme for adults is Celebrate the Centennial and we will have lots of book lists and prizes to keep you inspired and rewarded. You get prizes for both signing up and finishing the program (reading six books), plus there will be drawings along the way. Kids will Read on the Wild Side, with books about animals keeping them entertained all summer, until the final pizza party on August 1.

June 5th is the kick-off event for kids, and at 1:30 Dr. Robert James will bring in animals from around the world. The adult program will launch on June 13th, and we will have a party with summertime snacks! No matter what age you are, there is a Summer Reading Club for you!
